We removed a one foot width border, about eight inches deep around our property and backfilled it with wood chips. We have such a limited amount of precipiation, that we want to sink as much of the rainfall as possible within our site.

We have created large swale, or pits, in many areas of each of our yards, backfilled them with horse, or cow, manure, lots of woods, newspaper, and other sources of carbon. These swales harvest much of the rainwater that falls on our site.
